End-to-End Operations for Singapore’s Island Gateway

Sentosa Express, Singapore

Singapore’s gateway to its most visited leisure destination demands a standard of service that matches the experience it carries. When the Sentosa Development Corporation sought a long-term operations and maintenance partner for the Sentosa Express, they awarded the contract to STRIDES.

Since 1 September 2024, STRIDES has operated the Sentosa Express under a 12-year contract, with an option to extend by a further four years, providing end-to-end operations and maintenance, engineering services, long-term overhaul, and service excellence across four stations and seven vehicles.

The Challenge

The Sentosa Express is not a conventional transit environment. It serves one of Singapore’s highest-footfall tourism destinations, where passenger experience, service consistency, and operational reliability matter in equal measure. The system moves visitors between HarbourFront and Sentosa Island across a 2.1 kilometre elevated route, connecting the mainland to an island that welcomes millions of visitors each year.

Managing a specialised monorail system in a tourism context demands more than technical competence. It requires an operator that understands both the engineering requirements of a live rail system and the service expectations of a leisure destination where every journey is part of a broader visitor experience.

The Approach

STRIDES applied the same operational discipline and engineering rigour developed across Singapore’s MRT network to the Sentosa Express, adapting it to the specific demands of a tourism-facing monorail environment.

End-to-end operations and maintenance cover the full scope of daily service delivery, from platform operations and passenger management to rolling stock reliability and depot management. Long-term overhaul planning ensures the seven-vehicle fleet is maintained to the highest standard across the full contract duration, with engineering capabilities in place to support asset performance over the long term.

Service excellence sits alongside technical operations as an equal priority, recognising that for visitors to Sentosa, the monorail is as much a part of the experience as the destination itself.
